Dot Mandala Basics

Saturday, February 27, 2021 - 10:00am to 12:30pm

Painting Dot Mandalas is a fun, creative activity that can help you relax and de-stress during these challenging times of Global Pandemic.  Mandalas are fascinating designs based on concentric circular patterns that reach deep into our being.  This workshop adds the element of social connection and unity as the group is guided through the process of creating the same mandala.  Like Reiki, the mandala experience goes beyond intellect and words.  It is something you need to experience for yourself.

This fun, relaxing ON-LINE beginner level class will introduce you to a step by step process to create a beautiful  4 inch x 4 inch "Love" mandala, based on colours of the heart, using acrylic paint and basic dotting tools.  NO ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.  Because of the Pandemic restrictions, all participants must supply their own materials (see list below).  I recommend you also have a look at this explanatory video Getting Ready For Your First Dot Mandala Class.

To register:  Phone (613-283-6663) or email ( before 6pm February 25, 2021.

Course Fee: $25 e-transfer at time of registration.  Includes a copy of the pattern.

Materials required:

1. Surface on which to paint (I recommend a 6inx6in piece of black or gray cardstock.  A 6 inch canvas, painted matte black would also be ok.  Please prepare for the Mandala pattern by placing a mark on the centre of the cardstock or canvas. (See Video Link.)

2. Scrap paper or cardstock (leftover Xmas card backs would work great) for warm up and practice.

3. Liquid acrylic paint in the following colours, if possible:  blackwhitebright red, dark red, light pink, pink, dark pink

4. Paint palette or small jars (preferably with a cover to keep your mixed paints from drying out)

5. Fine paint brush to repair (oopsies)

6. Cylindrical Dotting tools.  I have tools for sale ($25) for local delivery, but for this pattern you would also need to add 5/8 inch and 1/2 inch dowels.  If you source or make your own tools, you will need the following diameter sizes:  16 mm (5/8 in), 13 mm (1/2 in), 10 mm (3/8 in), 8 mm (5/16 in), 6 mm (1/4/ in), 5 mm (3/16 inch),  and 3 mm.  A 3mm ball head stylus (nail dotter or embossing tool) or equivalent  (e.g. end of wooden skewer) is useful for tapering dots.  Note:  the larger coloured rods from Amazon are fine, even though the first two rods are only 14mm and 12 mm.  Samples of compatible tools are shown below (the DIY tools are the ones I have available).

7. Paper towels

8. Small container of water

9. Hairdryer

Skills to be developed in the class:

1. An appreciation of dot Mandala painting as a meditative art that can encourage connection to our inner core of calm, other humans, and Universal Source.

2. Familiarity with Dotting materials and supplies.

3. Mastering the 8 point Mandala structure.

4. Developing the ability to align dots with the center of the Mandala (no stencils)

5. Beginning to develop skills in fixing errors and making adjustments as a project is created.

6. Learning to use beginner level instructions independently.

7. Create Mandalas with up to 18 steps.
